18 days to go - should I camp?

I'm thinking about camping on the trip instead of using Youth Hostels and B&Bs - I'm attracted to the idea of using little or no electricity at all. I'm not so much worried about the weight - it'll only add about 4kg, but more so about the initial cost of the equipment. Below is what I've been thinking about (if the info below doesn't make sense, that's because I don't know anything about camping). Please feel free to leave comments.

Equipment needed: tent, sleeping bag, padded sheet, stove, front panniers and front rack for the bike.

After a couple of hours Googling and searching eBay, I found that the Hilleberg Akto one person tent is the one to get. It is lightweight (1.5kg + protective ground sheet), easy to put up and importantly, has a large vestibule area for cooking when it's raining, and for storing bags over night. This tent is £325 new or about £250 second hand on eBay.

Sleeping bag - haven't done my research on this there yet, but maybe costs about £100?

There are two types of stoves: alchohol stoves and gas/liquid stoves. The latter is basically an inverted tripod that screws to a canister of gas or pressurised liquid fuel. They can be cheap and clean, but are noisy and gas canisters cannot be refilled - you throw it away when it's empty and buy another.

The vast majority of alchohol stoves are made by a Swedish company called Trangia and sell for about £55 for the standard size, and £22.50 for the tiny, minimal version. Trangia also make non-commercial stoves for their military (pictured above/right) - these are not available new from shops, but only cost about £7.50 from army surplus shops.

Waterproof front panniers bags: £75. Tubus front rack: £55.

So that's another £55 on bike parts, and £400 for the camping equipment. The tent, stove and panniers (but probably not the sleeping bag) could be resold on eBay without loosing much value.

If I do buy this lot, I would have to go on cycling trips to The Netherlands and Scandinavia to make it a worthwhile purchase!
